opposition to Walmart in our neighborhoo...

Dear Mayor Frankel,

According to the PB Post business section yesterday Walmart is considering a location for a new store on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach.  The site is 6 acres of vacant land at Gregory Rd, a few blocks north of Southern Blvd, on the east side of Dixie.  We hope that the community leaders will oppose this in any way they can.  It is our opinion that a Walmart at that location would change our community in a negative way.  Currently that part of town is an incubator for small businesses.  This is partly because there are so many small retail spaces available on Dixie, Southern Blvd, and Belvedere Rd.  There have been multuifaceted efforts over the years to foster an environment that is welcoming to pedestrians and bicycles.  Additionally nearby Georgia Ave. provides ideal locations for complementary light manufacturing, office and retail.

We believe that Walmart coming to the area would lead to empty buildings resulting from failed businesses, and a gradual decline in the welcoming nature of this business corridor.  It’s a story repeated across small town America that accompanies a shift from small retailers to “big box” store shopping. The promise is low prices and convenience.  We feel that the risk is too high, that loss of diversity and opportunity will in the long run outweigh this benefit.

We hope ours will not be the only voice of opposition.

Business Referrals

Unless it already exists I'd like us to have a list of vendors that we have been happy with or dissatisfied with. For example, I'm looking for a reputable roofer and it would be good to know if someone else in the neighborhood knows of a good one --- or one to avoid.

Thank you,

Raphael Calzadilla
